What is Steel Wire Rod?

     2024-01-29

Wire rod is a rolled steel product (alloy or non-alloy), manufactured from semi-finished steel with a rectangular, rounded, hexagonal or squared shape. Especially, fine cross-sections are reached by sequent cold drawing. Wire rod is wrapped around into the coils and also carried in this form.

The steel wire rod is a finished product and is cold-formed for farther processing. Although it has a variety of shapes, it is mostly rolled round. Diameters often range from 5 to 15 millimeters, with most comply with the ISO standards, makes it easy for the sizes to advance in increments of 1 mm to 20 mm.

All steel wire rods are formed into the coils without any break. This is to ensure that steel wire rods are well-prepared for farther processing (usually by heat treating, coating, and cleaning). The coils’ internal diameter often varies from 810 to 910 millimeters, and the external, from 1100 to 1300 millimeters (depends on the capability of mill’s equipment). Subsequently, the weight of the coils differs from approximately 600 kg and larger above 2 tons.

Steel wire rods can be used for a wide range of products depending on how it is shaped and treated. The main usage is in the manufacturing of:

  1. wire mesh,
  2. nails
  3. springs
  4. reinforcement wire
  5. barbed wire
  6. wire ropes
  7. welded wire mesh.
